Tallcree First Nation celebrates major connectivity upgrades across three reserve lands
In the vast wilderness of northern Alberta, where the nearest city lies 600 kilometers to the south and the closest hamlet is still dozens of kilometers away, the three reserve lands of Tallcree First Nation seemed worlds apart from the connected communities most Canadians call home. But that isolation was about to change forever.
For Tom Meneen, housing manager for the Tallcree Tribal Government, the daily challenges of maintaining community homes once meant having limited ability to assess the severity or nature of problems before arriving on-site.
Today, Meneen’s work has been revolutionized by connectivity. “When I need to fix something in a home or address a concern, I can now quickly check what the issue might be by logging into the monitoring system before I head over,” he explains. This remote diagnostic capability has transformed his ability to prioritize safety concerns and respond efficiently to residents’ needs.
The change extends beyond his desk—Meneen now carries his tablet wherever he goes, continuously monitoring the homes under his care. Even on the busiest days, nothing slips through the cracks.
This transformation didn’t happen overnight. Five years ago, the Tallcree Tribal Government embarked on an ambitious journey to bridge the digital divide that separated their community from opportunity. It was a bold vision that required the right partners and unwavering commitment.
TELUS stepped forward as their partner, supported by crucial funding from the federal Universal Broadband Fund and Alberta Broadband Fund. Together, they set out to bring something many urban Canadians take for granted—reliable, high-speed TELUS PureFibre® and world-leading 5G wireless connectivity—to every member of Tallcree First Nation. Two TELUS wireless towers, enabled through the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission’s Broadband Fund now ensure comprehensive coverage across the community.

The impact reaches far beyond immediate needs. Meneen, who brings Red Seal carpentry expertise to his role, is already looking toward the future. The Tallcree Tribal Government has ambitious plans to expand their residential footprint, building new homes for a growing community. The PureFibre infrastructure was thoughtfully designed with this growth in mind, ensuring that each new home will be equipped with the same smart technologies that have revolutionized community maintenance and support.
The connectivity revolution has embraced the entire community. Nation members interested in TELUS services have been connected, with many benefiting from universal program rates subsidized by the Tallcree Tribal Government—ensuring accessibility for all.
When Treaty Days arrived, TELUS team members joined the celebration, marking not just a technological milestone, but a transformation that touches every aspect of life in Tallcree First Nation.
This story represents something larger than infrastructure. It’s about possibilities realized through meaningful collaboration. Working alongside Indigenous governments and funding partners, communities across Canada are discovering that transformative technology creates opportunities that extend far beyond faster internet. It’s about ensuring families are safe and comfortable in their homes, about communities writing their own digital futures and about connection that transcends geography.
In the heart of northern Alberta, where vast distances once meant isolation, Tallcree First Nation now stands connected—not just to the world, but to a future rich with unprecedented opportunity.
