Inspiring Indigenous youth in B.C. to play soccer

TELUS is a proud sponsor of Whitecaps FC’s First Goals program which shared the love of soccer with over 1,800 Indigenous youth in 15 Indigenous communities throughout B.C. in 2024. Hear from Alisya of TELUS and Brandi from We Wai Kai First Nation about the value of soccer programs like First Goals.

“Providing the kids with the necessities to advance in their soccer careers at a young age is amazing and it allows them to know that we care and that we see something in them even if they don’t.”

Brandi Varga, Wellness Manager, We Wai Kai First Nation

TELUS Friendly Future Foundation

Here’s how we’ve helped Indigenous youth reach their full potential from October 2024 to September 2025:

  • TELUS Canadian Community Boards granted $1.3M in funding to support 87 Indigenous youth programs nationwide.
  • The TELUS Student Bursary program awarded 96 Indigenous youth from coast to coast with bursaries valued at over $395,000, including a matching contribution in partnership with Indspire, a national Indigenous charity whose north star is to ensure that, “within a generation, every Indigenous student will graduate.”
  • The TELUS Friendly Future Foundation provided grants of close to $190,000 supporting 4 projects specifically for Indigenous Peoples.
Edmonton Native Healing Centre

Expanding services for Indigenous seniors in the Edmonton area

The Edmonton Native Healing Centre (ENHC) has received a grant from the TELUS Seniors Health and Wellness Fund administered through the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation, enabling them to expand their vital services for Indigenous seniors. This meaningful initiative will support 60 Indigenous seniors weekly through a comprehensive program that combines traditional practices with essential services.

At the heart of this program is the Sharing Circle, complemented by seniors-focused health classes and a welcoming daily drop-in service. Participants benefit from soup and bannock lunches and access to culturally relevant services, creating a nurturing environment that honours their heritage while addressing their physical and spiritual needs.

“The older community members enjoy the hospitality we provide at ENHC through programs like our collective kitchen, card nights and just enjoying socializing over tea and coffee in the drop-in. All these wonderful moments are provided through generous support of organizations like TELUS Community Ambassadors and the broader community. Thanks to the Ambassadors for the gifts of coffee and cream, clothing, gloves and blankets,”

Harold Roscher, ENHC Executive Director

The Centre’s commitment to empowering individuals through spiritual development centered in the Creator’s heart continues to strengthen community bonds and preserve cultural traditions.

TELUS’ commitment to artistic integrity

We are committed to supporting the artistic practices of Indigenous Peoples while being mindful of the historic role organizations have played in the misappropriation of Indigenous art and culture. We have an obligation and responsibility to ensure that TELUS’ use of Indigenous art in our digital and physical spaces is respectful of Indigenous artists.

In 2024, expanding on our commitment to artistic integrity, we declared that we will not use AI technology to create or replicate the art of or imagery of Indigenous Peoples.
